Larimar Meaning, Properties & Care Guide

What Is Larimar?

Larimar is one of the rarest gemstones on Earth, found in only one place in the entire world — a single mountainside in the Barahona province of the Dominican Republic. Its dreamy blue hues range from pale sky blue to deep ocean teal, often swirled with white patterns that evoke sunlight dancing through shallow Caribbean waters.

Because of its extraordinarily limited source, Larimar is sometimes called the "Caribbean Atlantis Stone" or the "Dolphin Stone". Each piece is completely unique — no two stones carry the same pattern of colour and movement.

Larimar Meaning & Symbolism

Across many traditions, Larimar is associated with:

  • Calm & tranquillity — its watery blues are said to soothe anxiety and bring a sense of peace
  • Clarity of communication — linked to the throat chakra, it is thought to encourage honest, open expression
  • Feminine energy & healing — often gifted to mark significant life moments such as engagements, births, and anniversaries
  • Connection to the sea — making it especially meaningful for those who love the ocean

Whether you resonate with crystal healing traditions or simply love a gemstone with a story, Larimar carries a depth of meaning that makes it far more than just beautiful jewellery.

Larimar Properties

From a geological perspective, Larimar is a variety of pectolite — a silicate mineral. What makes Dominican Larimar unique is its exceptional blue colouration, caused by trace amounts of cobalt replacing calcium in the mineral structure. It rates 4.5–5 on the Mohs hardness scale, making it softer than many popular gemstones and worthy of thoughtful care.

How to Care for Larimar Jewellery

Because Larimar is relatively soft and porous, a little care goes a long way in keeping your piece beautiful for decades.

  • Keep it away from harsh chemicals — remove your Larimar jewellery before using cleaning products, perfumes, hairspray, or sunscreen
  • Avoid prolonged sunlight — extended UV exposure can gradually fade the stone's vivid blue colour
  • Clean gently — use a soft cloth or a mild soap solution with lukewarm water; avoid ultrasonic cleaners or steam cleaning
  • Store separately — keep Larimar pieces in their own pouch or compartment to prevent harder stones from scratching the surface
  • Remove before swimming — chlorine and salt water can dull the finish over time

Why I love to Set Larimar in Argentium Silver

I choose Argentium silver to complement every Larimar piece because of the beautiful silver white shine. Unlike standard sterling silver, Argentium contains germanium, which makes it more tarnish-resistant, hypoallergenic, and longer-lasting — a fitting match for a gemstone as rare and precious as Larimar.

Each of my Larimar pieces is a one of a kind, handcrafted to honour the individuality of every stone.
